于本月 17 日，John McAfee 于推特上指出，他协助保护了比特币（Bitcoin）创办人中本聪（Satoshi Nakamoto）的真实身份，有人人自称是中本聪，亦有不少人花费大量时间和精力希望找出他，但现在 McAfee 认为已经是时候揭露他的身份，McAfee 将会逐步收窄其身份范围，直至中本聪自己揭露身份。

究竟是谁创造了比特币？这问题一直困扰著整个加密货币社群，以下人选是社群所作出的推测：
- 发布加密货币先驱比特黄金（Bit Gold）的 Nick Szabo
- 曾经回应指“已经没再参与比特币有关工作”而引起当时媒体哗然，现居美国的日本人 Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto
- 最早期的比特币矿工及开发者之一 David Kleiman
- 继中本聪后，第一位协助比特币开发的 Hal Finney
- 现时宣称是中本聪的 Craig Wright
然而，McAfee 似乎已经不能再接受有关社群推测及自称是中本聪的人所作的行为，McAfee 于推特上表示，虽然他自从 19 岁起便酗酒、吸毒、沉迷女色和违法等等，但他却创立了全球其中一间最大防毒软件公司 McAfee，他非常了解骇客技术。然而，这些言论并不能显示他可以证明谁是中本聪。

阴谋论有趣，但中本聪的钱包最为关键
社群一直围绕着中本聪的钱包而讨论，当中有达成千上万的比特币未曾移动，而当这个钱包有任何举动，亦将会是中本聪与整个加密货币社群的最佳回应，钱包未有活动让不少人怀疑中本聪是恐惧还是克制，是否遗失私钥，中本聪是否已经去世，或者其实是一种方式限制比特币供应等等。
McAfee 其实已经透露中本聪是一个团队，不是中情局（CIA），也不是任何一个政府部门，而该白皮书其实由一个人写出，该人现时居住在美国，如中本聪仍保持隐密，McAfee 所列出范围将会逐渐缩窄。

然而，McAfee 是次举动大有可能只为引起传媒关注，最后他可以轻松改变主意，并指出揭露其身份将令中本聪安全受到威胁，而终止这场闹剧。
